A TRAMP ABROAD

Hartford, Conn: American Publishing Company, (1880).

First Edition of this volume of humorous sketches, observations and digressions occasioned by the Clemens family's trip to Europe from Spring 1878 through Autumn 1879.  Their travels took them primarily through Germany and Switzerland, with final stops in France and Italy. The illustrations are by W. Fr. Brown, True Williams, B. Day as well as other artists, with also a few pictures made by Twain.  In total, 328 illustrations.

This copy is the scarce and highly desirable original full sheepskin (what the publisher called the 'library' binding) with black leather spine label.  It bears the engraved frontispiece in the very scarce First State, captioned 'Moses' rather than 'Titian's Moses.'

A better than very good copy (FFEP excised; joints chafed). Copies with this First State frontispiece rather than the usual cloth binding are highly uncommon.

A highly valued literary collectible.
