Mr Blettsworthy on Rampole Island
London: Ernest Benn, (1928).
An exceptionally Fine First Edition copy of the author's allegorical satire written just after the death of his wife. The highly detailed pictorial dust jacket by Sir William Orpen depicts a naked Mr Blettsworthy watching cannibals dancing around a fire, and is a marvelous collectible in itself. The story concerns our hero shipwrecked among savages whose rituals and beliefs parody those of modern society. In the end though, he awakens to discover that all of this has been a delusion within his own insanity. This is probably Wells' most psychopathological work. This copy comes protected in a custom-made, quite lovely red slip case.
And what a dust jacket.
