Rebecca Of Sunnybrook Farm

Boston; NY: Houghton, Mifflin; Co., (1903).

An amazingly fine First Edition of this classic. Blanck 22632; a Johnson High Spot. Tight, fresh and square, pictorial boards sharp and vivid, and, most unusually, the white pigment on the front cover remains clear and completely unrubbed. This is the true first issue with all provable points (" Don't turn in at the side" on p. 325; "in the October sun" on p. 327; letters of the publisher's spine imprint are 1/8" high.) Loosely inserted is a wonderful quotation from the book, handwritten in ink by the author who has signed her full name beneath it: "It's the dearest thing in life to me, but it's an awful care!" said Rebecca of her little pink parasol." [signed] Kate Douglas Wiggin. Basis for three films, most notably the 1913 adaptation starring a young Mary Pickford, this copy is housed in a custom matching green cloth clamshell box with leather label and gilt lettering. A rare and exceptional copy.
