With the Night Mail: A Story of 2000 A.D.
NY: Doubleday, Page & Co., (1909). Very Fine, pristine, obviously unread First Edition of Kipling's only science fiction tale. Beautifully iillustrated in color by Frank X. Leyendecker and H. Reuterdahl, this unique work is Kipling's vision of a nighttime mail run from London to Quebec aboard a dirigible in the year 2000 (so much for the author's forecasting abilities). This is quite the production: four full-page color plates, color pictorial endpapers, text written on the rectos only of each leaf, and an exceptionally handsome binding looking virtually brand new. The rather curious ads at the rear promote aeronautical equipment contemplated to exist in the year 2000. This is a magnificent copy, fine & bright, and an extremely collectible piece of period literature. Item #10195
